QUILTREX V1.0 (QLTRX)
The Patchwork Puzzle Challenge
by Steve Herring (c)1992
INTRODUCTION
QUILTREX is a puzzle game where you move colorful patches around to
match a variety of quilt patterns. Some are easy and relaxing while
others will blow your mind!
REQUIREMENTS
QUILTREX runs on IBM/compatibles using video displays with at least 16
color capability and the ability to show characters in a 40x25 format.
There are no special memory/disk requirements.
The following files are included in a complete software set. If a hard
disk is used, be sure to keep them all in one directory:
QLTRX.EXE QLTRX.DAT QLTRX.DOC
If a floppy disk is used, do not use write protect tabs, as the program
writes a file back to the disk whenever you leave the game.
Change to the drive or directory where these files reside and enter
QLTRX to start the program.
GAME INSTRUCTIONS
From what you have read above, you can probably start the game now and
quickly understand how it works. But just for the record, or for your
reference if you have a question, here are the rules:
1. When you run this program you should see a title screen. Press any
key to go to the quilt puzzle screen.
2. At the quilt puzzle screen you will see a complete quilt pattern
on the left-hand side of the screen. On the right-hand side this
same pattern is mixed and displayed all jumbled up.
In all puzzles, the quilt is divided into 36 square
"patches" which are mixed up for the puzzle.
3. The lower left-hand corner patch of the puzzle quilt is removed
and set aside to give you room to slide the other patches around.
This leaves an open black space in the puzzle quilt.
4. Use the arrow keys (NUMLOCK OFF if on the key pad) to move the open
space up, down, left, or right. When the open space moves, the color
patch in front of it slides over to take its place. In this way
all the patches can be moved around within the quilt borders.
5. Try to arrange the patches to match the pattern on the left.
6. When every patch in the puzzle quilt matches every patch in the
pattern quilt (except for the open square), you win. The patch that
was removed is replaced, and you earn the point value of that quilt.
The quilts are numbered from 1 to 50, and each has a point
value based on level of difficulty from 30 to 410.
7. Press the ENTER (RETURN) key to go to the next quilt. The puzzles get
more difficult as you go along. Every time you make a match the point
value is added to your total score. The total point value of all 50
puzzles is 7600.
8. To turn off the sound effects at any time, press "S". Press "S" again
to turn the sound back on.
9. If a puzzle stumps you or looks boring, you may advance to the next
one without earning points. At any time when working a puzzle, press
the ">" key to abandon the puzzle and go to the next one.
10. You may end the game at any time by pressing the escape key [ESC] or
E for EXIT or Q for QUIT. Whenever you end the game, it is saved at
your point of progress. This could be at the start of a new quilt or
in the middle of working a quilt.
11. When you start the game after the first time you play, you will
automatically be brought to your point of progress with your latest
total score.
If you want to start over or set up for another player,
simply rename or delete the file QLTRX.PPT using DOS or
your DOS shell commands.
12. When you go through all 50 patterns, the game will recycle to the
first puzzle, but you may continue building up your score to 9999.
THE SHAREWARE WAY
QUILTREX is shareware. It may be freely copied and distributed as long
as all files in the set listed above are included. As shareware it is
intended to be used only for evaluation. If you like it and wish to
continue playing it without that nagging feeling of guilt, simply
register yourself as a user by sending $8 to:
